Trump rejects strict gun control in the US during the annual convention of the National Rifle Association

MADRID, 28 May. (EUROPA PRESS) -

Former President Donald Trump has attended this Friday the annual convention of the National Rifle Association (NRA, for its acronym in English) in Houston, in the state of Texas, where he has rejected stricter control of weapons in the United States.

In the framework of tensions over the massacre at the Robb elementary school in Uvalde, the former president indicated, during the event, that "the existence of evil is one of the best reasons to arm law-abiding citizens" , according to the Bloomberg news agency.

The measures suggested by Trump, among others, are to increase support for the mental health of young people, to deal with "broken families", single points of entry in schools, including surveillance, as well as allowing teachers to use weapons in non-visible places, according to the aforementioned agency.

In his speech, Trump has criticized the Democrats for polarizing the population and has demanded to prioritize the financing of school security over humanitarian aid to Ukraine, arguing that the United States spends some 40,000 million dollars in arming kyiv.

"Whenever a disturbed or insane person commits such a horrible crime, there is always a grotesque effort by some in our society to use the suffering of others to further their own extreme political agenda," he said, referring to Democrats, according to 'Politico'.

On the other hand, he has also demanded, in this sense, that the US Congress vote "immediately" to recover the amount of money invested in the framework of the coronavirus pandemic, according to the aforementioned media.

"Whatever our differences are on other issues, what the hell is stopping Democrats from immediately passing measures to increase school safety?" as collected by 'The Hill'.

Trump confirmed his attendance at the NRA convention on Wednesday, saying the country "needs real solutions and real leadership" right now. "That is why I will keep my commitment to speak in Texas at the NRA convention and deliver an important message to America," he wrote on his own network, Truth Social.

The meeting was also attended by Senator Ted Cruz, R-Texas, and other key figures of the Republican Party, although the governor of Texas, Greg Abbot, and the lieutenant governor, Dan Patrick, have canceled their participation due to intense criticism about the police device during the Uvalde shooting.

"The horror doesn't matter. Texas' response to evil has always been one of unity, strength and resilience. Uvalde is strong. Texas is strong. The entire country is on the side of the grieving families in Uvalde," Cruz said in the event, as collected on his official Twitter profile.

Cruz has called shooters who commit massacres and shoot "deliberately" at the American population "lunatics" and "monsters." "They are the picture of evil," she said, adding that issues like chronic isolation, declining church attendance, or video games aggravate the situation.

"What stops the armed bad guys are the armed good guys," he said, recalling that the important thing is to support the families, friends and acquaintances of the 19 minors and the two teachers who lost their lives at the hands of Salvador Ramos , the Uvalde shooter.

The NRA's argument for the shooter's mental health is the same one Republicans have been using to justify easy access to guns, from Abbott to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.

Although Abbott has not attended, he has released a video in which he explains that gun control laws throughout the United States have not prevented "crazy people from committing evil acts" within the framework of a convention that he has registered, in addition , protests organized by, among others, the 'Black Lives Matter' collective.

The US governor has indicated that the shooter committed a serious crime "before he even pulled the trigger" by possessing a weapon on the school premises. He then committed capital murder by killing 21 people, he has said, as reported by The Texas Tribune.

For his part, Patrick, the lieutenant governor of Texas, has not spoken during the convention so as not to "bring any additional pain or sorrow to the families and all those who suffer in Uvalde," according to the aforementioned newspaper.

The celebration of this new conference of the powerful arms lobby of the United States takes place less than 450 kilometers from where this 18-year-old broke in with a legally purchased AR-15 assault rifle and murdered 19 children and two of their teachers.

In the early hours of Tuesday, Ramos, after shooting his grandmother - who is in serious condition - broke into the first school in Uvalde, Texas, where he executed 19 children and two teachers after barricading himself with them in one of the classrooms. . Another 17 people were injured, although most were released.

Ramos, whose motivations are unknown, was finally shot down by a United States Border Police agent who was off duty, but who was the first to go along with two other agents to the scene.
