They release Antauro Humala, brother of the former president of Peru, on reduction of sentence

MADRID, 20 Ago. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The National Penitentiary Institute (INPE) of Peru has reported this Friday that it is granting freedom to Antauro Humala, sentenced to 25 years in prison for the 'Andahuaylazo', after his sentence has been reduced for work and education.

The INPE has indicated in a statement that, after remaining in prison for 17 years, 7 months and 14 days, the resolution granting him freedom has been issued, based on the law that establishes that in cases of people sentenced for kidnapping, a crime more serious than Humala Tasso committed, the computation of redemption of 7 days of work or education for one day of freedom should be applied.

Since Humala worked and studied for 3,667 days while in prison, he has been able to reduce his sentence by one year and seven months.

The prisoner, brother of former president Ollanta Humala, was sentenced in 2009 to 25 years in prison for the 'Andahuaylazo', as the 2005 takeover of the Andahuaylas police station is known with the aim of overthrowing the Government of Alejandro Toledo and restore the 1979 Constitution, which resulted in six deaths.

Although his brother Antauro's past was known when Humala ran for president, this episode once again focused public debate when, barely a month after his arrival in government, the ruling party began to process an amnesty petition from Congress, which finally stopped.

The 'Andahuaylazo' is not the only coup attempt by Antauro. In 2000, along with Humala and 69 other military reservists, he took over the Locumba mine to demand the resignation of Alberto Fujimori. They did not lay down their arms until the interim government of Valentín Paniagua Corazao offered them an amnesty.
