The women's team and one more barrier to break

MADRID, 20 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Spanish women's soccer team will try this Wednesday to qualify for the semifinals of the European Championship in England, something that mainly happens by leaving out the host, which would mean overcoming a cross in a major international tournament for the first time. It will be his fifth attempt, we remember the other four.

1. Semifinals of Euro 1997. The first time that the women's national team had the opportunity to play a match in a major event was in its first participation, 25 years ago in the event organized by Norway and Sweden. With just eight teams, they made it through the group stage to advance to the semi-finals and meet Italy, who won 2-1 there. The goal was scored by Ángeles Parejo.

2. Euro 2013 quarterfinals. Spain did not return to a major tournament until 2013, although since then they have not missed any more, apart from the Olympic Games. Also in Sweden, and with twelve participants, they made it through their group to go through to the quarterfinals and meet Norway, where Ada Hegerberg was already playing and who did not give them too many options by defeating her 3-1. Jenni Hermoso, in '92, scored the goal for a team that Irene Paredes and Lola Gallardo survived nine years later.

3. Euro 2017 quarterfinals. After making history in 2015 by qualifying for their first World Cup, the national team was excited, with Jorge Vilda on the bench, facing the continental event that hosted the Netherlands, where 16 teams participated. The Spanish returned to overcome their group and had a theoretical accessible match in the quarterfinals against Austria, but they were not able to score a goal and said goodbye in the penalty shootout.

4. Round of 16 in the 2019 World Cup. Spain continued its evolution and qualified for the next World Cup, in France, where it achieved the first win in its history against South Africa. However, they could not beat Germany and finished second, which sent them to a tough meeting in the round of 16 against the United States. Jenni Hermoso was able to balance Megan Rapinoe's first penalty goal almost instantly and although the team showed its face, it was finally eliminated by another disputed maximum penalty with a quarter of an hour to go.
