The US claims to be willing to lift sanctions on Venezuela "based on concrete steps"

MADRID, 12 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The director of Hemispheric Affairs of the National Security Council of the White House, Juan González, has affirmed that the United States is willing to lift the sanctions imposed on Venezuela, as long as there are "concrete steps" by the other party.

"We are 100% in support of a dialogue that is led by the Venezuelans, not one where the United States imposes conditions. Our policy is clear, we are totally willing to lift the pressure of sanctions, but based on concrete steps," he said. González explained in an interview with the Voice of America network.

González has also highlighted the importance of advancing in the "genuine" dialogue between the government and the opposition and that it is the Venezuelans themselves who lead this process, and not other countries.

In any case, González has stressed that the United States continues to recognize opposition leader Juan Guaidó as the legitimate president of Venezuela despite the fact that other countries on the continent do not agree. "We respect it, but there is a consensus in a dialogue, respect for human rights," he argued.

The delegations of the Government and the opposition explained in May their willingness to resume the political dialogue initiated in Mexico after the relaxation of some of the Washington sanctions.
