The UN shows its "concern" about the bombing of the Damascus airport, blamed on Israel

MADRID, 14 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The United Nations has shown its "concern" about the bombings carried out on Friday against the airport of the Syrian capital, Damascus, blamed on Israel and which caused the suspension of operations in the facilities, and has recalled that the attacks against civil infrastructure " are strictly prohibited by Humanitarian Law".

"The Secretary General (of the UN, António Guterres) is concerned about the reports of bombings on June 10 against the Damascus International Airport, which caused damage to the runways and the closure of the airport," said the spokesman for the Secretariat. UN General, Stéphane Dujarric, during his daily press conference.

Thus, he has stated that Guterres is equally "concerned" about "what appears to be an increase in violent actions and hostile rhetoric in the region in recent weeks", for which he "warns of the risk that a miscalculation could lead to a broader conflict in an already volatile region.

In this sense, he indicated that Guterres "asks all those involved to exercise maximum restraint and avoid greater tensions", while underlining the UN's willingness to "help member states resolve their differences through dialogue ". "He is willing to exercise his good offices in this regard," he has settled.

Syrian authorities announced on Friday the suspension of operations at the airport citing "technical reasons", without giving further details, before adding that the dates for the restart of inbound and outbound flights at Damascus International Airport they will be announced "as soon as the equipment is repaired" to "guarantee the safety" of operations.

The announcement took place just a few hours after Syria denounced a new bombardment by Israel against the surroundings of the capital, after which the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights pointed out that the targets attacked are warehouses of pro-Iranian militias in the surroundings of the Damascus International Airport.

The Israeli Army has carried out dozens of bombings in Syria, arguing that it is acting to prevent the establishment of Iranian bases in the country and the sending of weapons to the Lebanese Shiite militia party Hezbollah by the Iranian authorities, which support Damascus in the framework of the war that broke out in 2011.
