The UN Security Council will meet urgently on Monday to discuss the fighting between Israel and Islamic Jihad.

The UN Security Council will hold an emergency closed-door meeting this Monday to discuss the latest escalation between Israel and Islamic Jihad in the Gaza Strip, the Palestinian ambassador to the UN, Riad Mansur, announced in a statement.

The meeting occurs at the request of the United Arab Emirates, a member of the United Nations Security Council, in a proposal backed by China, France, Ireland and Norway, as announced by the director of strategic communications of the United Arab Emirates Foreign Ministry, Afra Mahash al-Hameli.

"The United Arab Emirates has emphasized the need to restore calm in the Gaza Strip, reduce the escalation and preserve the lives of civilians," according to the Emirati statement, and "expresses its deep concern about the current escalation and calls for the utmost moderation, to avoid being dragged into new levels of violence and instability".

During Monday's meeting, members of the Security Council will discuss "current developments and ways to support international efforts to achieve a comprehensive and just peace," according to the note, collected by the emirate's official news agency, WAM.

The Palestinian authorities reported this Sunday that the latest attacks by the Israeli Army have increased the death toll to 32 dead and 215 wounded.

With this balance, the 'Sunrise' operation that began this Friday has caused the death of more than thirty people, including six children, in less than three days. Among the more than 200 wounded there are 96 children, 30 women and 12 elderly people, according to the count, published by the official Palestinian news agency Wafa.

Israel, for its part, has confirmed at least three wounded and more than thirty treated for bruises.
