The UN Security Council condemns the escalation of violence in Iraq

MADRID, 2 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The members of the Security Council of the United Nations have condemned this Thursday the violence registered in Iraq between August 29 and 30, and have expressed their concern for the dead and wounded people.

"The members of the Security Council have condemned the violence in Iraq on August 29 and 30 and have expressed their deep concern about the deaths and injuries reported. They have taken note of the efforts of the Iraqi Government to restore order," says a statement shared by the President of the Security Council, Nicolas de Rivière.

The Security Council has "strongly" urged all parties and actors to participate, "without further delay, in a peaceful and constructive dialogue to promote reforms and chart a constructive path forward."

More than 30 people have died since Monday due to the mobilizations of Al Sadr supporters, after he announced his decision to officially withdraw from politics.

Prime Minister Mostafá al Kazemi has promised that his government will investigate the deaths, which includes identifying who opened fire during the protests and for what reasons.
