The UN raises the number of civilians killed since the start of the war in Ukraine to about 4,100

MADRID, 31 May. (EUROPA PRESS) -

Around 4,100 civilians have died since the start of the war in Ukraine, triggered on February 24 by order of Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to data provided by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.

The agency has indicated that to date it has confirmed 4,974 dead civilians --1,540 men, 1,014 women, 93 girls and one hundred boys, as well as 69 minors and 1,258 adults whose sex is unknown-- and 4,826 injured --971 men, 653 women. , 112 girls, 137 boys and 166 minors and 2,787 adults whose sex is unknown--.

Likewise, it has stated that in the Donetsk and Lugansk regions, located in the Donbas region (east), there have been 5,037 civilian victims -2,307 dead and 2,730 wounded-, while in areas controlled by the Government of Ukraine 4,332 victims have been documented --2,171 dead and 2,161 injured--.

On the other hand, in the territories controlled by "armed groups affiliated with Russia-- 705 victims have been confirmed--136 dead and 569 wounded--, while in other regions of Ukraine that were under government control when the victims were recorded this figure rises to 3,863 --17.67 dead and 2,096 wounded--.

"Most of the recorded civilian casualties were caused by the use of explosive weapons with a wide impact area, including attacks with heavy artillery and multiple rocket launchers, as well as missiles and bombardments," the agency said, adding that it considers that the real number of victims "is considerably higher".

In this sense, it has emphasized that "the reception of information from some locations where there is intense hostility has been delayed and many reports are still pending corroboration", which affects, among other areas, Mariúpol, Izium and Popasna, "where there are reports of numerous civilian casualties."
