The UN applauds the postponement of new measures on the border between Kosovo and Serbia after tensions

MADRID, 2 Ago. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The United Nations has assured that it "closely follows" the situation on the border between Kosovo and Serbia and has applauded the postponement of two measures that came into force on Monday, August 1, and that affected people entering the country from Serbia .

"I can say that we are following the events in Kosovo very closely and that we applaud the postponement of the implementation of the decisions that led to the increase in tensions on the ground," said the spokesman for the UN Secretary General, Stéphane DUjarric. .

Thus, he stated that "the special representative of the secretary general and head of the UN Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK), Caroline Ziadeh, asked yesterday (for Sunday) all parties to address the problems in good faith through dialogue facilitated by the European Union to strengthen stability and security for all".

Tensions on the border increased on Sunday when the Serbs erected barricades on the border in protest at the decisions of the Kosovar government on the application of measures to veto the use of Serbian identity documents and license plates in its territory and that came into force this Monday. Finally, Kosovo has extended the application of the law for one month.

The director of the Serbian Government Office for relations with Kosovo, Petar Petkovic, accused the Kosovar authorities on Monday of having fomented "a very serious crisis" and acknowledged that during the day on Sunday they were "on the verge of serious conflicts".
