The Russian Navy begins maneuvers in the Baltic Sea coinciding with NATO exercises

MADRID, 7 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Russian Navy began maneuvers on Tuesday involving more than 20 ships from the Baltic Fleet, coinciding with the military exercises that NATO is carrying out in this region, amid tensions over the invasion of Ukraine, triggered on February 24 by order of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The Baltic Fleet has indicated that "naval maneuvers involve more than 20 combat ships and gunships" that carry out "combat training tasks", before detailing that these vessels include amphibious assault ships and corvettes, according to has collected the Russian news agency TASS.

Also, in the maneuvers, joint practices are being carried out with Ilyushin Il-38 maritime patrol and anti-submarine warfare aircraft, while artillery fire exercises will be carried out against air and naval targets. On the other hand, practices will be carried out on protection against chemical and biological attacks.

The exercises coincide with NATO's Baltops 2022 exercises, which feature the deployment of 45 ships under US leadership. These maneuvers will continue until mid-June, after the exercises carried out in May by the Russian Navy in front of the enclave of Kaliningrad.
