The PSOE believes "radically undemocratic" that the TC can stop the debate of a law in Congress

MADRID, 15 Dic. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The PSOE spokesman in Congress, Patxi López, sees a "qualitative leap" in the Constitutional Court (TC), which this Thursday decides whether to admit the PP's appeal to stop the reform that the court itself seeks to renew, and believes that it is "radically undemocratic" that can "prevent" the legislature from legislating.

The TC meets this Thursday in an extraordinary plenary session to decide whether to admit the appeal of the PP that asks to paralyze in a very precautionary way the parliamentary processing of the amendments introduced in the reform of the Penal Code by which the election system is modified and arrival at the TC of the two candidates nominated by the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ) in order to overcome the current paralysis.

In statements to the media in the corridor of Congress, López has stressed that "for a long time, the drift of the right and some conservative judges is frankly worrying", and has pointed out that the "maneuver" of the extraordinary plenary session "is unprecedented ".

According to the Socialist spokesman in the Lower House, the court seeks to "prevent Congress, where popular sovereignty resides, from fulfilling its role." "It seems to me a qualitative leap that the only thing that comes to say is the radically undemocratic nature of what is happening," he added.

Thus, he has expressed his desire that the TC, "largely expired", not admit the PP process, insisting that the court must make decisions on the constitutionality of the laws a posteriori, once Congress has already legislated. Doing it before is "in some way an interference" of the judiciary in the legislative branch.
