The opposition criticizes the gap within the Government on the Summit in Madrid, although it supports the initiative

MADRID, 8 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The PSOE has managed this Wednesday to advance in the Senate, almost unanimously, an initiative to support the preparation and development of the NATO Summit in Madrid. Precisely, United We Can, which did not attend the 40th anniversary of Spain's accession to the Atlantic Alliance and has criticized some contracts on holding this event, has no representation in the Upper House.

In this context, the Socialists have obtained 224 votes in favor, including those of the PP and the PNV, the abstention of the Catalan independence parties and the votes against Bildu.

According to the text presented by the PSOE, which has finally been approved with an amendment by the PNV, the government is urged to transfer within NATO the "conviction" that the commitment required by the response to the invasion of Ukraine that began by the president of Russia, Vladimir Putin, must be "complementary" to the "intensification" of the peace and security policy related to the southern flank of Europe. In his opinion, it should be the object of "increasing attention" and the necessary implication.

Along these lines, he expresses "his satisfaction" with the NATO Summit being held in Spain and supports the preparatory work for the meeting, both by the Government and by the organization itself.

Likewise, according to the text, it supports the development of "the important" debates that will take place within the framework of the summit in Madrid. NATO will adopt its new Strategic Concept, a 'road map' for the coming years, and compliance with the NATO 2030 Agenda, both of which are of key importance in defining the role of the Alliance in the global security scenario, marked by Russia's aggression against Ukraine.

Here, the Socialists have agreed to incorporate an amendment to the PNV, which refers to the fact that this new scenario "must take into account the security commitments recently assumed by the EU institutions through its Strategic Compass, with the horizon of advancing in its Strategic Autonomy and at the same time strengthen the transatlantic link".

In addition, the Socialist Parliamentary Group urges the Government that, in the development of the summit, the strengthening of solidarity and cooperation with Ukraine be promoted, a country that the group recognizes "dignity and determination" in the confrontation with Moscow.

In this line, the text also expresses, in line with the will expressed by the Government of Spain, its support for NATO to respond favorably to the requests to join the organization by Sweden and Finland.

The ministers of United We Can not attend on Monday the act of commemoration of the 40th anniversary of Spain's entry into NATO. Subsequently, the training reproached that the contract approved by the Council of Ministers for the holding of the NATO Summit was awarded "by finger". Ministers such as Consumer Affairs and Labor, Alberto Garzón and Yolanda Díaz, distanced themselves from these criticisms.

This gap between the two government formations has been criticized by opposition senators, such as the PP, Vox, Ciudadanos and UPN, who have reproached the Socialists for "keeping" Podemos in the Executive.

For this reason, from the PP they have justified their support for this initiative by offering themselves to the PSOE to carry out this type of motion and asking them "not to trust their fellow travelers." "I hope that our support does not hinder them too much," they have ironized.
