The Prime Minister of Peru asks for unity to avoid the dismissal of Castillo

MADRID, 14 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) -

Peru's Prime Minister, Aníbal Torres, has called on the country's population to unite in defense of democracy to prevent a possible impeachment of President Pedro Castillo.

"Here we all have to unite to defend democracy, to defend the popular will. That is the imperishable rule. Whoever put Pedro Castillo in power, (is) the supreme power, the power of the people. there is none other," Torres said in statements to local authorities in Pucallpa reported by the newspaper 'El Comercio'.

"An absolutely disqualified power does not have all that power, but part (...), it wants to carry out the coup d'état now through the constitutional accusation. How can Peru advance like this?" added the prime minister.

In this sense, Torres has urged that the Government and the population work "together to move the country forward, united as brothers, within political, economic, social or religious differences," reports the Andina agency.

In this way, Torres has reaffirmed his criticism of the complaint by the Peruvian attorney general against Pedro Castillo, indicating that "those who support it contradict what is stated in article 117 of the Constitution, which specifies the grounds for which a president can be accused".

The attorney general, Patricia Benavides, filed a constitutional complaint against President Pedro Castillo on Tuesday afternoon before the country's Congress for the alleged crimes of criminal organization, influence peddling and aggravated collusion.

According to the Prosecutor's Office, Castillo would be the head of a criminal organization active in the Ministry of Transport and Communications in complicity with Silva, as well as with officials from Provías Nacional and Provías Descentralizado, the Presidential Office and businessmen and third parties, to favor the consortium. Puente Tarata III and other companies in public bidding processes.

This constitutional complaint must be evaluated by the Subcommittee on Constitutional Accusations, chaired by the former president of Congress Lady Camones (APP). In the event that it prospers, the demand will go to the Permanent Commission and will finally be voted on in plenary session, according to the RPP radio station.
