The president of the Senate sees "urgent" to give military capacity to the European Union

BARCELONA, 13 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The president of the Senate, Ander Gil, has argued that providing the European Union (EU) "with military capabilities to have integrated Armed Forces with ample capacity for maneuver is an urgent need", in the face of the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the new world geopolitics.

"Reality has shown that there is no alternative to NATO to defend Europe from external aggression, but it is imperative that Europe has military autonomy with the capacity to react in its territory," he defended in a forum this Monday in 'La Vanguardia' collected by Europa Press.

The President of the Senate believes that Europe "needs its own autonomy vis-à-vis its partners and competitors in a multipolar world in defense of its own interests", and sees the Common Foreign and Security Policy as the key instrument for expanding EU action in that area.

For Gil, this European reaffirmation should not undermine the effectiveness of NATO: "On the contrary. An EU with greater responsibilities and capabilities in security and defense would reinforce the European axis of the Alliance."

In addition, he has claimed that "defending democracy and freedom involves reinforcing the Alliance and providing it with adequate capabilities", and has predicted that the future of the organization in the next 10 years will be determined at the NATO summit to be held in Madrid June 29 and 30.
