The president of Ecuador, Guillermo Lasso, has appointed José Ruales as the new Minister of Health this Thursday, after last Tuesday the then head of the portfolio presented his resignation after disagreeing with the measures adopted by the Executive during the mobilizations that took place in the country for almost 20 days.
"I welcome Dr. José Ruales to our work team. From the Ministry of Health, he will attend urgently and with priority to the Public Health System. Success in this new challenge!", the Ecuadorian president expressed on his Twitter account .
Until now, Ruales - who has more than 40 years of experience in health and public health - was Deputy Minister of Governance and Health Surveillance, as reported by 'El Universo'.
Ruales takes over from Ximena Garzón, who presented her resignation last Monday after disagreeing with the declaration of a state of emergency for the health system during the indigenous mobilizations. According to Garzón, the measure was not necessary.
Last Wednesday, Lasso announced new appointments of ministers after the resignation of the heads of Urban Development and Housing (Miduvi) and Transport and Public Works (MTOP), although he did not name any person to take over the Ministry of Health.
