The president of Ecuador, Guillermo Lasso, has affirmed this Friday that his predecessor, Rafael Correa, "is only interested in his freedom", insinuating that the former president does not care about the well-being of the country.
This has been indicated by the current president in an interview with Ecuador TV, in which he has detailed that a few months ago he had a telephone conversation with Correa at his request.
"They told me (Rafael) 'Correa wants to talk to you', and I spoke with Correa. I did it because I am interested in Ecuador, but in that telephone conversation I realized that Correa is not interested in Ecuador" detailed Lasso, according to 'El Telégrafo'.
Likewise, the president of Ecuador has specified that Correa is only "interested in his freedom, his impunity, only his and not even that of his people."
For this reason, Lasso has called for "talking about the future", alleging that former President Correa "is the past".
Correa, convicted of a crime of bribery in a case that has also affected other members of his former government, is a political asylum seeker in Belgium, after leaving Ecuador in 2017 and traveling to the European country.
The former president has always defended that he is the victim of political persecution, something that he has claimed on many occasions before the Belgian authorities.
