The Polisario considers Borrell's words in favor of a consultation a "positive step"

The Polisario Front has considered a "positive step" that the High Representative for Foreign Policy of the EU, Josep Borrell, has declared this Tuesday in favor of holding a consultation so that the population of Western Sahara "decides its future".

The Polisario representative to the EU, Oubi Bachir, highlighted in a statement that Borrell's statements in an interview on La 1's 'La Hora' imply admitting that the self-determination referendum is "the key to resolving the conflict."

Any other approach, according to Bachir, has only "complicated the situation and pushed away a just solution", while fueling the risk of greater "instability" throughout the region. The note does not make explicit reference to the Spanish government's support for the autonomy plan presented by Morocco.

Borrell alluded during his interview precisely to the position of Spain, to point out that "it was and is that of the EU", that is, "defend the holding of a consultation so that it is the Saharawi people who decide how they want their future to be" .

The Polisario now hopes that the words of the head of European diplomacy "will be translated into deeds", in such a way that the EU adopts "practical measures" to "accelerate the process of decolonization of Western Sahara". In this way, the EU "would be part of a just and lasting solution and not be 'part of the problem'".
