The official MPLA leads the provisional results in Angola with more than 60 percent of the votes

The Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), of the current president, Joao Lourenço, leads the provisional results of the elections in Angola with 60.65 percent of the votes, after the scrutiny of just over 33 percent of ballots according to the National Electoral Commission (CNE).

The MPLA has so far obtained about 1,220,000 million votes. It is followed by the main opposition force, the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) with 33.85 percent of the votes, which means almost 680,750 ballots, details the Angolan news agency Angop.

Far behind are the third and fourth options among Angolan voters, the Social Renewal Party (PRS), with 1.45 percent of the support, or about 29,250 votes; and the National Front for the Liberation of Angola (FNLA), with 1.28 percent, some 25,800 ballots collected.

Of the other four political forces that have been presented, for the moment, only the Humanist Party of Angola (PHA) has managed to overcome the barrier of 1 percent of support. The National Patriotic Alliance (APN), the National Party for Justice in Angola (P-NJANGO), as well as the Broad Convergence for the Salvation of Angola (CASA-CE) coalition, remain below that figure.

Election day has passed calmly, as reported shortly after the closing of the polls by the CNE, which has thanked the voters for the exercise of responsibility they have carried out by going to vote in "peace" and with "civility".

Of the nearly fourteen and a half million Angolans who were called to the polls, some 22,500 have done so from abroad. It is the first time in the country's history that the diaspora can vote from outside. This has been done in up to 25 cities in twelve different countries.
