The monsoon rainy season already leaves more than 280 dead in Pakistan

MADRID, 23 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The last weeks of monsoon rains in Pakistan have already left 282 dead and more than 200 injured across the country, waiting for new storms this weekend.

Deluges have overflowed rivers and damaged roads, bridges and some 5,600 houses since the start of the season on June 14, according to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).

Most of the damage and casualties have been recorded in the province of Balochistan, in the south-west of the country, where 88 people died and 62 were injured. Next is Sindh, in the south of the country, with 67 deaths.

A total of 57 people were killed in the eastern Punjab province, 56 in the northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province and 14 in other parts of the country, according to the agency.

Despite the fact that the rains have moderated throughout this week, the Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecast new downpours this weekend, particularly in the large city of Karachi, the capital of Sindh and one of the great economic centers of the country.
