The Minister of Finance is unaware of the new tax inspection of King Juan Carlos, but trusts the Tax Agency

MADRID, 8 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Minister of Finance, María Jesús Montero, stated this Wednesday that she is unaware of the new tax investigation being carried out by the Tax Agency on King Juan Carlos I, since it is an independent body, but in any case she has said she trusts "fully "in the professionalism of its officials.

In the corridors of Congress, Montero has affirmed that the Tax Agency "is independent in the development of its activities", but that he fully trusts its actions because, in his opinion, it has always demonstrated "its professionalism".

The minister has indicated that she does not have "any more information" and therefore cannot confirm or deny that said investigation is being carried out, which was published this Wednesday by the newspaper 'El Mundo'.

According to this publication, the Tax Agency has requested King Juan Carlos several requests for information on the expenses derived from hunts that he attended after his abdication as head of state in 2014.

The Department of Financial and Tax Inspection of the Treasury claimed from the King Emeritus, during the last year, requests for information to find out the origin of the funds that paid for the trip and other expenses of the hunting days he attended between 2014 and 2018, when left the Head of State and, therefore, no longer had the inviolability of the position.

The newspaper indicates that the Tax Agency is now seeking to know if Don Juan Carlos "had an unjustified increase in assets before the Treasury since he abdicated as King." The Treasury would also require justification for expenses of "a smaller amount that he received in a private capacity", such as "symbolic gifts made by businessmen" close to whoever he was head of state.

The former monarch's legal advisers have been justifying the operations and responding to the requirements, the amounts of which do not exceed the threshold of 120,000 euros per year.
