The Japanese Foreign Ministry summons the Russian ambassador to protest against the arrest of its consul

MADRID, 27 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Japan, Yoshimasa Hayashi, has summoned the Russian ambassador to the Japanese country, Mikhail Galuzin, to present him with a "strong protest" for the arrest this Monday of his consul in the city of Vladivostok, Motoki Tatsunori.

By summoning him, the Foreign Office has expressed its protest and has demanded a formal apology from the Russian side. "I strongly urge the Russian side to take this request seriously," Hayashi requested, after requesting that a repetition of the events be avoided in the future.

"There is absolutely no evidence that the personnel in question participated in illegal activities as claimed by the Russian side," the diplomat told the Ameba News channel.

Hayashi has denounced the treatment that the consular official has received: "He was blindfolded from start to finish and his hands and head were held." "It is extremely regrettable that the actions of the Russian side have been a clear and serious violation of the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations and the Japan-Soviet Consular Convention," said the Japanese minister.

"It is absolutely unacceptable. It is unbelievable that the employee has been treated as 'persona non grata' in addition to being treated unfairly, and we strongly protest it," he added.

The Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) reported on Monday that the Japanese consul in the city of Vladivostok, Motoki Tatsunori, has been arrested on Russian territory. In a statement, the Russian authorities clarified that he had been arrested after being caught "red-handed by receiving monetary compensation in exchange for information on aspects of Russia's cooperation with countries in Asia and the Pacific."

The Russian Foreign Ministry summoned the Japanese ambassador in Moscow, Toyohisa Kozuki, to transmit the information and express a "strong protest" about what happened. In addition, the Russian diplomatic portfolio has detailed that Tatsunori has been granted a period of 48 hours to leave the country.
