In 2023, transport subsidies will reach an allocation of 3,419 million, which represents an increase of 25.7% compared to 2022, mainly to pay the 660 million euros that it costs to maintain free Cercanías and Media Distancia tickets for frequent travelers.
As stated in the draft General State Budget (PGE) for 2023, this new item also includes a subsidy of 3.6 million euros to compensate Renfe for the creation of the new 50% discounted multi-trip ticket for Avant trains and some AVE lines.
Renfe will also receive 1,009 million euros as compensation for the public service obligations it assumes, and 301 million euros are added to compensate for the commuter and medium-distance public service obligations provided in Catalonia in the 2021 financial year that were transferred to the community Autonomous since January 1, 2010.
In urban and metropolitan transport, during 2023 the Barcelona Metropolitan Transport Authority (109 million euros), the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands (48 million euros), the Madrid Regional Transport Consortium (127 million euros) will receive aid. and the Valencia Metropolitan Transport Authority (38 million euros).
Regarding the legal deductions of 75% enjoyed by residents of the Canary Islands, Balearic Islands, Ceuta and Melilla, applicable to direct regular traffic transport rates with the Peninsula or 50% on inter-island routes, the credit amounts to 825 million euros.
The increase in the budget for subsidies responds to the Government's objective of increasing the share of public transport compared to the car to decarbonize the economy and, at the same time, reduce energy dependence on Russia and its fossil fuels.
