The Government creates the Commissioner for Sustainable Energy Strategies in Island Areas

Ribera will propose a person "with a profile of extensive experience" in the energy sector of the islands

MADRID, 5 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Government has modified two royal decrees to enable the creation of the figure of the Commissioner for Sustainable Energy Strategies in Island Areas, as reported by the Executive in the references of the Council of Ministers on Tuesday.

Specifically, the changes have occurred in the royal decree amending royal decree 139/2020, which establishes the basic organic structure of ministerial departments, and royal decree 500/2020, which develops the basic organic structure of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge.

The objective of this new figure is "to guarantee the optimal execution of the actions planned in the management of renewable generation within the framework of the Perte (Strategic Project for economic recovery and transformation) of Renewable Energies, Renewable Hydrogen and Storage", has detailed government.

"Due to the particular conditions of the energy systems of the islands, they need 'ad hoc' schemes to activate the energy transition. All this makes it necessary to reinforce the governance mechanisms and the organizational instruments necessary to achieve energy sustainability in the regions Spanish islands", he added.

The Third Vice President of the Government and Minister for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, Teresa Ribera, highlighted that the island territories "have special characteristics, due to their isolation, and are a priority for the Government".

According to a statement from the portfolio headed by Ribera, the minister has also emphasized that the new Commissioner will ensure the materialization of the programs and strategies for decarbonising the archipelagos.

"That is why I will propose a person who has a profile with extensive experience in the energy sector of the islands," he added.

The Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan includes a budget of 700 million euros to promote sustainable energy on the islands, divided into 467 million for the Canary Islands and 233 million for the Balearic Islands.

In both autonomous communities, investment strategies and plans are being implemented with objectives such as multiplying by ten the weight of self-consumption or providing them with the necessary infrastructure to be 100% enabled territories for electric mobility in 2026.
