The Government has celebrated that the European Commission has "opened the door" to an urgent intervention in the energy market, in line with the requests made a year ago by the Spanish Executive.

At a press conference after the Council of Ministers, the Government spokesperson, Isabel Rodríguez, welcomed "the response that the President of the European Commission gave yesterday accepting that proposal by the President of the Government to open the door to an urgent intervention in the energy market".

Rodríguez highlighted that the Government is "leading" to give "a different response" to the crisis caused by the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, of which the "Iberian exception" that has been applied in Spain and Portugal for more of two months.

In this sense, the also Minister of Territorial Policy highlighted that the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, has spent "more than a year explaining that a different alternative is necessary", in the face of a situation that directly affects European households and industries.

This Monday, the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, defended a reform of the electricity market in Europe, after pointing out that it was designed "for other circumstances" and that it is behind the "exorbitant" prices paid on the continent. in the context of the war in Ukraine by linking the price of gas to that of other energies.

At the end of July, Pedro Sánchez announced that Spain would submit a reform proposal to Europe due to exorbitant energy prices and this Monday the president of the EC argued that the current market was designed "for other circumstances" and that it is behind of the high prices paid on the continent in the context of the war in Ukraine.
