The Foreign Minister affirms that Chile advocates a Summit of the Americas "without exclusions"

MADRID, 27 May. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Chilean Foreign Minister, Antonia Urrejola, stated this Thursday that Chile advocates a Summit of the Americas "without exclusions", although she stressed that "they have not made it a condition" to attend the participation of Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela.

"We have manifested (this) to the United States. We have manifested it both in a set of private conversations, as well as I have manifested it publicly: that we advocate a summit without exclusions and that implies inviting all the countries that are from the Americas , from Canada to Chile, passing through the entire Caribbean", he said, according to the newspaper 'La Tercera'.

Urrejola also specified that, despite the fact that it is the decision of the host country, in this case the United States, the Chilean president, Gabriel Boric, will make the country's opinion known during the meeting, which is "an important space to exchange different opinions."

"I believe that beyond the positions that one may have regarding these three countries, especially in terms of Human Rights, it seems to me that there is a set of challenges in the region that we have to face together and dialogue we have to have them between all and all", he added, according to the aforementioned newspaper.

Urrejola also confirmed on Thursday a bilateral meeting between the Chilean president, Gabriel Boric, and his US counterpart, Joe Biden, within the framework of the summit, as reported by the newspaper Bío Bío Chile.

The US government reported earlier this month that Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela would not receive an invitation to the summit in Los Angeles, arguing that they are not democratic nations. "Countries that, due to their actions, do not respect Democracy, will not receive invitations," assured the Undersecretary of State for the Western Hemisphere, Brian Nichols.
