The European Union and Ukraine will start trading electricity on June 30

BRUSSELS, June 28 (EUROPA PRESS) -

The European Network of Electricity Transmission System Operators (ENTSO-E) announced on Tuesday that electricity trade between Ukraine and the European Union will start this week, on June 30.

"The gradual increase in electricity trade is particularly important in the context of Russia's aggression against Ukraine," Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson said in a statement.

In a further step, Simson added that he will allow Ukraine to obtain "revenue" to support its energy system in a situation where "Russian attacks have reduced its national income" while "making additional electricity available to the EU". affordable at a time when prices are exceptionally high.

The Commissioner for Energy has indicated that this represents the next step for the integration of the system between the two regions, after in March, after the Russian military invasion of Ukraine, the country's electricity distribution networks were synchronized in war and Moldova and the European Union.

Synchronization has also included Moldova, since together with Ukraine they constitute an energy island. The disconnection of the Ukrainian electricity network from the Russian one occurred at the end of February, which increased the risk of blackouts in the country, after which Ukraine and Moldova asked to accelerate the project of interconnection of electrical networks with the EU that has been underway since 2017.
