The Ethiopian Gebreslase, gold in the World Cup marathon with a record of the championships

EUGENE (UNITED STATES), July 18. (dpa/EP) -

The Ethiopian Gotytom Gebreslase won gold in the women's marathon at the Eugene World Cup on Monday, with a new championship record, after completing the test in 2 hours, 18 minutes and 11 seconds, after a fierce duel with the Kenyan Judith Jeptum Korir .

The 27-year-old was nine seconds quicker than Kenyan Judith Jeptum Korir, who led much of the race but was unable to follow Gebreslase's attack with less than two kilometers to go and ultimately took silver. The Israeli Lonah Chemtai Salpeter completed the podium, more than two minutes behind the Ethiopian.

The race soon split, when after the first kilometer only 18 athletes could keep up with the lead pace at 3 minutes and 18 seconds per kilometer. After overcoming the 10 km barrier, the Kenyans and Ethiopians pushed even harder, leaving the Americans led by Sara Hall on the way.

We had to wait for the last third of the test to see the first 'serious' breakaway, led by Korir and that Gebreslase, world champion in Berlin last year, insisted on following. Until the end, a fierce fight, side by side, between the two Africans, until the Ethiopian culminates her feat with the definitive attack after kilometer 40, without looking back and confident to touch glory again and win gold World Cup, the second for Ethiopia in the marathon after the one achieved in the men's category.
