The CUP rejects tweaks in the crime of sedition and demands to "repeal" it completely

The CUP spokeswoman in Congress, Mireia Vehí, rejected this Tuesday the possibility of reforming the crime of sedition in the Penal Code to make it "comparable" with that of other European countries, as defended by the Government, and what it demands from the PSOE, United We Can and the ERC is to "repeal" it directly.

At the press conference after the summit of European leaders in Brussels last week, President Pedro Sánchez argued that Spain has a Criminal Code that in some crimes "is not comparable" to other European democracies, but stressed that it does not have the support enough parliamentarians to undertake the reform.

"But it cannot be (approved) because in most European countries (the crime of sedition) does not exist," Vehí said at a press conference from the Lower House. In his opinion, this criminal offense derives "from dictatorships" and "bases repression on the control of public order." "It is typical of a state that is not democratic or of dictatorships," he stressed.

For this reason, its formation is committed to "repealing" the crime directly. "We tell PSOE, United We Can and ERC", he continued, before pointing out that the negotiating framework in which the three formations move within the dialogue table is "wrong" and "provides more problems than solutions ".

The CUP spokeswoman attributed Sánchez's words in Brussels to an attempt by the president to talk about the crime of sedition in a "modern European environment", but recalled that the European Council, in a report, advocates considering part of freedom of expression to defend peaceful independence.
