The creation of companies marks a minimum of two years in August and dissolutions shoot up 22%

The number of new commercial companies decreased by 6.4% in August compared to the same month of 2021, to a total of 5,907 companies, its lowest figure since August 2020, in the midst of the pandemic, when just over 5,700 companies were created , according to data released this Tuesday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

With the fall in August, the creation of companies chains five consecutive months of year-on-year declines after it decreased by 8.2% in April, 4.6% in May, 6.8% in June and 14.4% in July.

For the constitution of the 5,907 companies created in August, more than 276 million euros were subscribed, which is 24.4% less than in the same month of 2021, while the average subscribed capital, which stood at 46,761 euros, fell 19.3% year-on-year.

While the creation of companies decreased, in August the dissolution of companies increased, by 22.2% compared to the same month last year, to a total of 1,558.

In the first eight months of the year, 3.6% fewer companies have been incorporated than in the same period in 2021 and 8.9% more companies have disappeared.

Of the 1,558 companies that closed their doors in August, 78.2% did so voluntarily, 13.4% due to a merger with other companies and the remaining 8.4% for other reasons.

18.2% of the mercantile companies that were created in the eighth month of the year were dedicated to real estate, financial and insurance activities and 18.1% to commerce. As for the dissolved companies by main economic activity, the highest percentages are in commerce (18.6%) and construction (15.5%).

For its part, the number of mercantile companies that increased capital rose by 1.2% in August, to 2,060 companies. The capital subscribed in these increases exceeded 1,244 million euros, a figure 35.2% lower than that of August 2021, while the average capital was 604,326 euros, 36% less.

MADRID AND CATALONIA LEAD THE CREATION OF COMPANIES

The communities that created the largest number of companies in August were Madrid (1,309 companies), Catalonia (1,185) and Andalusia, where 922 companies were created. The regions with the fewest companies in the eighth month of the year were La Rioja (24), Navarra (43) and Cantabria (54).

Twelve regions created fewer companies in August than in the same month of 2021. The greatest annual decreases were in La Rioja (-40%), Navarra (-33.8%), Extremadura (-17.5%) and the Valencian Community ( -14.5%), while the only year-on-year increases were made by Asturias (33.8%), the Balearic Islands (21.1%), Cantabria (20%), the Canary Islands (14%) and Castilla y León (5.6 %).

Considering the dissolved commercial companies, the communities with the highest number of dissolutions in August were Madrid (578), Andalucía (215) and Comunidad Valenciana (144). On the contrary, the autonomous communities with the fewest dissolved mercantile companies were Navarra (4), La Rioja (8) and Extremadura (14).

Twelve communities increased their number of business dissolutions in August, mainly Murcia (277.8%), Navarra (100%) and Cantabria (72.7%), while five cut it: Extremadura (-50%), La Rioja ( -46.7%), Castilla-La Mancha (-21.7%), the Canary Islands (-4.1%) and Catalonia, where the disappearance of companies decreased by 2.6% year-on-year.

THE CREATION OF COMPANIES FALLS 17.7% IN THE MONTHLY RATE

In monthly terms (August over July), the incorporation of new companies decreased by 17.7%, its most moderate drop in this month in at least five years.

For their part, business dissolutions fell by 4.1% in August compared to July, also registering their smallest decline in this month at least since 2018.
