The Congress of Ecuador opens an investigation commission for the femicide of a lawyer

MADRID, 28 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Congress of Ecuador has opened this Tuesday a commission to investigate the murder of the lawyer María Belén Bernal at the hands of her husband in order to deliver a report on the oversight and political control of the case.

Made up of five women assembly members, the plenary session of the Ecuadorian Parliament has created the occasional special commission "for truth, justice and reparation" in the case of María Belén Bernal, according to the newspaper 'El Comercio'.

Specifically, the commission has 30 days to study what happened during the murder recorded on September 11 at the Quito Police High School, carried out at the hands of her husband, Germán Cáceres, whose whereabouts have been unknown since then. .

"It is a political decision to monitor and it is a political decision to respond to a family that no longer has a daughter," said UNES deputy Gissela Garzón.

"Either we all assume a femicide that happened at the Police School or what are we here for? What are we going to tell the country?" Garzón added, as reported by Tele Amazonas.

The Ecuadorian authorities confirmed last Thursday the discovery of Bernal's body, at the same time that they announced the start of the search for the lawyer's husband, Germán Cáceres, the main suspect and who would have left the building aboard a vehicle.

Investigators have located Bernal's personal belongings in Cáceres's room and are examining, among other hypotheses, whether the crime could have been committed with the participation of several people. For his part, the president of Ecuador, Guillermo Lasso, ordered on September 17 the dismissal of the director of the Higher Police School.
