The confessed author of the murder of Abe is subjected to psychiatric examinations

MADRID, 25 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) -

Tetsuya Yamagami, the confessed author of the assassination of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, has been subjected this Monday to the first of a series of psychiatric examinations that will last until next November and that aim to analyze the criminal responsibility and imputability of the individual.

The 41-year-old man has thus left the Nara city prison where he was detained and has been transferred to a detention center in Osaka, where he will undergo these tests within the framework of a process initiated by the prosecution.

The Nara District Court has approved that Yamagami be deprived of liberty until November 29 for examination, according to information from the newspaper 'The Japan Times'.

Thus, prosecutors will examine the state in which the man was when he carried out the attack on Abe, who died on July 8 after being shot during a rally in Nara. Shortly after the attack, Yamagami admitted to killing him because of his relationship with the Unification Church, a sect that would have bankrupted his family.

While prosecutors have launched the psychiatric evaluation process, the defense team could request a similar process after indictment in an attempt to show that the defendant lacks criminal responsibility due to his mental state.

The Japanese Penal Code establishes that individuals with serious psychological problems lack criminal responsibility. The defense is expected to structure its arguments precisely on this basis.
