The community vice president considers it "key" to renew the CGPJ and urges to study changes in the election system

MADRID, 14 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The vice president of the European Commission responsible for the rule of law, Vera Jourova, has insisted this Tuesday that it is "key" for Spain to deal with the renewal of the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ) to avoid being perceived as "politicized" At the same time, he has urged that the system for appointing its members be studied as a priority so that it conforms to European standards.

"In the 2021 report, the Commission reiterated its concern about the fact that the CGPJ was not being renewed. It is key that Spain deals with this issue so that the judiciary is not politicized, so that it does not have that vulnerability", Jourova said during an appearance at the Justice Commission of the Congress of Deputies.

At the same time, he reiterated that for Brussels it is "important" that the appointment of the people who make up the CGPJ "is something that is studied as a priority."

In this regard, he recalled that "in the report it was mentioned that there must be a system of election by the counterparts, in accordance with the standards of the Council of Europe". These standards imply that at least half of the members of the CGPJ are appointed by the judges themselves.

Jourova stressed that "this issue of appointments must be resolved as soon as possible", adding that, precisely, she is in Spain to "debate" this matter and "see how a solution is worked out".
