The Chilean opposition asks the Government to strengthen the police force in the face of the exodus of agents

MADRID, 24 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) -

Opposition parliamentarians have asked the Government of Chile this Saturday to take measures to strengthen the police force to "encourage the permanence" of the agents.

The opposition, therefore, has urged the adoption of "a plan that allows for the permanence of officials in the institution" and, in this way, put an end to the "uncertainty that they have generated about the Carabineros", reported the newspaper 'La Third'.

The Carabineros body is in a "state of alert": they began a massive voluntary exodus. Since the beginning of the year, more than 700 voluntary departures have been made, while in the first months of 2021 560 casualties were made, as the aforementioned media has learned.

Among the reasons for the agents who withdraw, institutional uncertainty, excessive workload and the offer that exists in the private labor market stand out.

The deputies have accused the current Government of Gabriel Boric of lack of political support from the Executive for the institution.

"It is the null result of the political support that this government has given to the Carabineros," said the deputies of the Independent Democratic Union (UDI) Jorge Alessandre and Cristhian Moreira.

Also, the deputy of Evópoli Francisco Undurraga has criticized the situation, since it represents "the lack of profound changes in the institution". He has also asked for "greater guarantees" to avoid a greater "deficit of carabineros in the streets."

From the Socialist Party, several deputies have shown their concern. "This fact goes in the opposite line to what we have been requesting from the Government: to strengthen the rule of law," said Marcos Ilabaca, who has requested "strong support, not only in words, but in reality, in order to reverse this worrying situation".

The also socialist Jaime Naranjo has considered that a large part of the voluntary casualties are due to the fact that the carabineros are "tired of the high command making abuses and abuses and misusing economic resources while they are exposed in the street."
