The Chilean Convention delivers the final text of the draft Constitution to Boric

Boric emphasizes that the referendum on the new text, scheduled for September 4, should not be taken as a plebiscite for his Government

The Constitutional Convention of Chile has delivered this Monday to the president, Gabriel Boric, the final text of the project for the new Magna Carta, a document that will be submitted to a referendum on September 4 in the country.

The delivery takes place within the framework of the closing ceremony of the Convention one year after the process that has led to the drafting of a new constitutional project began, according to information from the Emol news portal.

"The 110th plenary session of the Constitutional Convention resumes to deliver the proposal for a new Constitution to the President of the Republic, Gabriel Boric," the agency reported through its Twitter account.

At the headquarters of the National Congress in Santiago, the vice president of the Convention, Gaspar Domínguez, pointed out that "whatever happens on September 4, Chile has already changed." Thus he has referred to a vote that will be mandatory for all Chileans authorized to deposit ballots in the polls. "The world is watching us and from afar, watching this process with wonder and hope," he said.

Likewise, he has stated that the implementation process of the new Constitution --if it is approved-- will be gradual and has highlighted that the "perfect Constitution does not exist and this is no exception".

In his speech after receiving the text, President Boric stressed the importance of discussing the content of the new Magna Carta with a high-minded vision and leaving aside any differences that may exist with the Executive.

"A lot of history has passed to get to this moment, many sacrifices including life to be able to discuss and debate a constitution that is born from a democratic debate," said Boric, who has elevated this Monday's day as "a day that without place It will undoubtedly remain in the annals of the country," according to the Emol portal.

The president has also valued the work of the members of the Constituent Convention, which has concluded "the mission entrusted to them by the people in October 2020", and they have agreed on a new Constitution despite "all the difficulties" that have arisen throughout the process.

"Today, dear compatriots, we begin a new stage (...) It is now a matter of reading, studying and debating the constitutional proposal that is delivered to the country today and, as President of the Republic, I have the duty to guarantee that each one of the citizens of our country will be able to make a free and fully informed decision on September 4", he added.

For this, he has asked "not to disqualify those who think differently" and has called on all the authorities, the media, political groups, social organizations and the civil population to row all in the same direction towards the success of the democratic process.

"I invite you to have an intense debate on the scope of the proposed text, but not on falsehoods, distortions or catastrophic interpretations that are alien to reality," Boric pointed out.

For her part, the president of the Convention, María Elisa Quinteros, was the second to speak and thanked the members of the Convention for the work carried out in recent months.

Boric also plans to meet with representatives of the different powers of the State to deliver the official document and evaluate not only the plebiscite process, but also the subsequent process that can be "key to generating conditions of stability and governability in Chile."
