The 55 Ukrainian soldiers who will learn the use of the 'Leopard' arrive in Spain this Thursday

MADRID, 16 Feb. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Army will instruct a total of 55 Ukrainian soldiers in Zaragoza in the use and maintenance of the 'Leopard' 2A4 that Spain plans to send to Ukraine. The soldiers arrive in Spain this Thursday along with another 70 troops who will receive training in other practices such as demining or dismantling explosive devices.

The Defense General Staff (EMAD) has reported that a new group of 125 Ukrainian combatants landed in Spain this Thursday to receive training from the Army in different locations throughout Spain.

The bulk of the group, up to 70 Ukrainians, will be located at the Toledo Infantry Academy to carry out the instruction and training of specific skills: health, demining and combat against IEDs (improvised explosive devices).

But in addition, another 55 will receive training for the first time in the crew of the 'Leopard' 2A4 battle tanks and their maintenance, essential to guarantee the operability of these systems, according to the Ministry of Defense.

These activities will take place in Zaragoza, although under the command of the Toledo Training Coordination Center (TTCC), dependent on the European Union training mission.

Within this framework, Defense does not rule out the possible participation of teams of trainers from other member countries of the European Union in Spanish training centers if necessary.

At the end of January, Spain promised to send the tanks to Ukraine. Although the exact number has not yet been determined, it is considered that Defense is working with the plan to donate to the Government of Volodímir Zelensky between five or six 'Leopards' that are already being rehabilitated at the factory of the Santa Bárbara company in Alcalá de Guadaira (Seville). ).

These are some units of the 2A4 model that the Ministry stored more than a decade ago and that have been without use ever since. This led Minister Margarita Robles to ensure that her condition was "regrettable", although now the Ministry decided to review how many of them could be recovered for shipment to Ukraine.
