Taiwan adopts measures so that asylum seekers from Hong Kong can apply for citizenship

MADRID, 31 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) -

Taiwan has adopted measures that will allow asylum seekers from Hong Kong to apply for citizenship after spending five years in Taiwanese territory.

These measures would make it easier for Hong Kongers who entered – after the imposition of China's National Security Law – under the government's 'humanitarian aid' provided since the summer of 2020 to relocate with the obtaining of resident status, has advanced Focus Taiwan news agency this Saturday.

More than a hundred Hong Kongers applied for asylum in Taiwan through said project, which sought to decriminalize illegal arrival to request political asylum. However, the island does not have a refugee program either. For this reason, some have left the Taiwanese territory due to the scarce means to apply for citizenship, the aforementioned media has reported.

Under the new rule, asylum seekers working in Taiwan can apply for permanent residency, and later citizenship, if they can prove they have worked for five years on the island.

The requirement that is needed is that the salary of the person applying for the residence permit must be at least 1.5 times higher than the minimum wage, according to sources cited by Focus Taiwan.
