Sweden promises Turkey security if it joins NATO

Swedish Foreign Minister Ann Linde assured this Friday that the country "will contribute to guaranteeing the security of all of NATO, including Turkey" if it manages to join the Alliance.

"Sweden will contribute in solidarity to the security of NATO as a whole," the minister said in a speech before the Swedish Parliament, according to information collected by the newspaper 'Expressen'.

Thus, he stated that Sweden's objective is "to move forward in a constructive spirit to address the issues raised by Turkey" and reiterated that Stockholm "condemns terrorism in the strongest possible terms", a clear allusion to the accusations made by Ankara, which they have insisted that Sweden serves as a "safe haven" for terrorists and members of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), which they consider a terrorist organization.

In this sense, he lamented that "a dark chapter has opened in the history of Europe" and criticized the Russian invasion of Ukraine. In addition, he has warned of possible aggression by Moscow against other countries, such as Moldova or Georgia.

On the other hand, he has emphasized that Sweden's possible NATO membership "does not stand in the way" of achieving "global nuclear disarmament". "A nuclear war can never be won and should never be fought," she has asserted.

Left Party MP Hakan Svenneling has expressed concern about the possibility of Sweden exporting weapons to Turkey in exchange for access to the country's entry into the Alliance.

He has also warned of the possible consequences of Sweden extraditing Turkish and Kurdish refugees to the country within the framework of an agreement between the parties. "The question is what the government is willing to negotiate," she said. In this sense, Linde has guaranteed that Stockholm "will defend human dignity".
