Stoltenberg kicks off NATO summit, with "important decisions" on the table

MADRID, 29 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Secretary General of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, has formally opened the leaders' summit in Madrid, from which he expects "important decisions" to strengthen the capacity of the Atlantic Alliance and mark the way forward for the next decade.

One of the main milestones of the summit will be the adoption of a new strategic framework, with which Stoltenberg has indicated that NATO will be more prepared to face the challenges derived from "authoritarian regimes" such as Russia and China.

Stoltenberg has called for work to "keep the Alliance strong" and "the population safe", within an "open door" policy that will be evident with the upcoming incorporation of Sweden and Finland, once the Turkish veto has been resolved.

The head of NATO has also used his brief opening remarks to praise the "courage" of the Ukrainian population and authorities. "NATO allies continue to side with Ukraine"; he has pointed out.
