The consulting firm STL Partners has placed Telefónica as the company with the best sustainability practices in the telecommunications sector, placing it at the head of a ranking that includes 45 companies from around the world.

The next four spots are held by Verizon, Proximus, KPN and SK Telecom.

To prepare the classification, published last May, STL Partners has been based on seven criteria: structured information on sustainability; commitments and incentives on sustainability and diversity; public information on scope one, two and three emissions and associated targets for their reduction; green finance; external recognition of social initiatives; commitment to biodiversity; and possibility for customers to reduce CO2 emissions.

Previously, the consultant released an analysis of the Spanish company, 'Sustainability at Telefónica: ten steps for sustainable telecommunications companies', in which it explains Telefónica's good sustainability practices and says that other companies in the sector can follow its example to integrate sustainability into its corporate strategy and its daily activity.

According to STL Partners, Telefónica has set ambitious goals for more than 20 years and this has been crucial in achieving strong involvement in the different business units, levels of responsibility and markets in which it is present, for which the Global Sustainability Department.

As elements of Telefónica's success in terms of sustainability, the consultant highlights the goal of zero net emissions, variable remuneration for employees and managers linked to the fulfillment of environmental and social objectives and the incorporation of the sustainability agenda by all departments of the company.

"Telefónica has explained to STL Partners that its employees personally believe in sustainability, in addition to seeing the benefit for the business and the commercial opportunity", the consultant has indicated.

The report also points out that Telefónica encourages and helps its customers to reduce their carbon footprint; its initiatives and reports are validated by third parties such as the Carbon Trust, AENOR and PwC; collaborates with other telecommunications companies and participates in various working groups on sustainability; and its sustainability team has established a work agenda with the business teams of all markets.

Likewise, it highlights ten points of Telefónica's sustainability policy that could be implemented in other companies, such as guaranteeing the commitment of the Board of Directors, setting realistic goals for energy and emissions, turning commitments and promises into actions, explaining to employees how relates his daily work to sustainability and taking advantage of sustainable financing, among others.
