Spain rejects Israel's decision to expand settlements in Palestinian territories: They push away the solution

MADRID, 14 Feb. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Government of Spain has shown its rejection of the measures announced on Tuesday by Israel to expand the settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories with the construction of 10,000 homes and the legalization of nine settlements.

In a statement sent by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Government has expressed its concern over these "unilateral" measures that "remove the prospect of a two-State solution", and which, according to it, is the "only satisfactory response to the legitimate national aspirations of Palestinians and Israelis, and a key element for peace and national security".

The West Bank --including East Jerusalem-- and the Gaza Strip --from which Israel withdrew in 2005-- were militarily occupied by Israel in the 1967 war along with the Golan Heights --in dispute with Syria--.

In total, some 700,000 Jewish settlers live in the West Bank, some of them in colonies considered legal by Israel and some in settlements considered illegal even by the Israeli government. International Law considers the colonization of militarily occupied territories a war crime.

Likewise, the Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, has condemned the announcement by the Government of Israel as being a "substantial obstacle to peace".
