Vilda's men beat Denmark, with a goal by Cardona in the 90th minute, and meet the hosts England in the quarterfinals

MADRID, 16 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Spanish women's soccer team reached the quarterfinal round of Euro 2022 after beating Denmark (0-1) this Saturday, with a goal from Marta Cardona in the 90th minute, although the draw was worth it, on the last day of the game. Group B, where it will be measured on Wednesday with the host England.

Jorge Vilda's men played it, as did the Danish, although the tie was enough for Spain to overcome the first phase of a EURO for the fourth time in a row. Despite the doubts and nerves shown by a team with high sights, the team complied suffering but with the intact opportunity to leave their mark on a great tournament.

It was no surprise that the Danes locked themselves in the back and gave the Spanish the lead, but Vilda's play was neither deep nor fast, and Denmark linked dangerous chances with very little combination early on. Harder was a constant problem, who opened the escape routes and also who finished them off.

The first one he generated was given to Holmgaard, then the Danish '10' herself put Paños in trouble at the start, and so on up to four in a row. A header from Caldentey already at 20 minutes cut the list of scares for Spain and Athenea had it very clear. The Cantabrian gave the depth that Vilda's team needed.

With their one on one down the left wing, the Spanish team came out, better towards the break, with Paredes' headers as the last chances. Spain grew and confirmed it in the restart, although the changes above did not finish bringing punch.

Esther González and Marta Cardona became the reference and Denmark was increasingly condemned to defend itself. The siege was clear, playing with precision and looking for the opportunity, but Spain lacked lucidity in the last meters and the Danes put in artillery because only victory was worth them.

Sandra Paños had to appear to stop a great opportunity from Nadim, but Vilda's, also trying with the long shot, did not fail in her first all or nothing of the tournament. Cardona sent a header to the net in the 90th minute that confirmed Spain in the quarterfinals in Brighton. With nothing to lose, the pressure is on England, while Spain look very much alive and with the best version of themselves yet to come out.
