Sánchez says that he will go down in history for having exhumed Franco guided by the "legacy of light" of republicanism

MADRID, 28 Nov. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, has assured today that he will go down in history for having exhumed Franco from the Valley of the Fallen guided by the "legacy of light" of republicanism. This was stated during his speech at the tribute to the writer Almudena Grandes at the Ateneo de Madrid.

Sánchez has spoken of the resistance that, according to what he has said, the writer had to face. Thus, he has pointed out that the portrait that today is incorporated into the gallery of the illustrious of the Ateneo de Madrid is "symbol of the many resistances with which Almudena Grandes lived: resistance from history, she lit a light with her books".

Having said this, he has given the exhumation of Franco as an example. "One of the things for which I will go down in history is for having exhumed the dictator from a great monument like the one he built in the Valley of the Fallen," he pointed out.

And he explained what led him to make that decision: "it was not so much that, which also, of course, was not due to the pending debt that we have with the relatives who are still looking for the remains of their loved ones, but also to claim a luminous past that was obscured from the republicanism that unfortunately was mowed down by the coup and the dictatorship".

Pedro Sánchez has stressed that what he wanted was to "vindicate that legacy of light" left by republicanism. Something, he has added that he incorporated into that decision "as important for our democracy as was the exhumation of the dictator from the Valley of the Fallen."

A decision that has framed in resistance. A resistance that the writer, according to him, has had since history, since literature "because she gave a voice to those who did not have it and since her life, always putting joy before her."
