Sánchez expresses his shock at the shooting of the former Prime Minister of Japan

MADRID, 8 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, has expressed his shock this Friday at the shooting of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who was shot in the back while he was at an electoral act in the city of Nara, in the southwestern Japan.

The leader of the Executive has condemned this aggression and has sent the best wishes of the Government to the former Japanese president and his family. "Our best wishes to him and his family and our resounding condemnation of this cowardly attack," he wrote on the social network Twitter.

"Spain stands in solidarity with the Japanese people in these difficult times", concluded the President of the Government.

After the shot, the former president collapsed on the ground and was rushed to the nearest hospital by helicopter. As reported by local authorities, Abe, 67, is in cardiorespiratory arrest.

For their part, the Japanese police have arrested a 41-year-old man, accused of attempted murder, and have confiscated his weapon. The suspect allegedly shot the former prime minister with a homemade shotgun. So far, the reason for the attack has not been revealed, according to the 'Yomiuri Shimbun'.
