Sánchez dismisses Nicolás Redondo as "a historical reference" who gave voice to the desire for change and democracy

MADRID, 4 Ene. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The President of the Government and Secretary General of the PSOE, Pedro Sánchez, went to the funeral chapel this Wednesday to bid farewell to the former Secretary General of the UGT, Nicolás Redondo, whom he has defined as a "historical reference" and "a great Spaniard" who gave voice to the desire for change and democracy.

In an intervention before the media at the union headquarters, where the funeral chapel has been installed, Sánchez pointed out that the story of Nicolás Redondo --who died this Tuesday-- is "the most brilliant story linked to all the causes that have materialized the UGT from the moment it was born".

This is how he referred to the fight for the dignity of peoples and workers and against inequality, at the same time as he has assured that it is a cause that still endures and that justifies the existence of both the UGT and the PSOE.

Sánchez pointed out that last night he received the news that Redondo was in a "very delicate" situation from the current general secretary of the UGT, Pepe Álvarez, and has assured that despite the fact that he was 95 years old, he was surprised "by the speed ". He has also affirmed that he has been "shocked", since it was being "a historical reference for modern democratic Spain" today, as he has defined it.

Likewise, he has remarked that the three characteristics that in his opinion have defined the historic union leader are "the fight, the commitment to the cause of the workers and dignity". On this point he has highlighted his "integrity" and his coherence in his political action and union commitment.

Sánchez also recalled that Redondo had to leave Spain and go into exile in France when he was a child, although he later returned and made it possible for us today "to have the rights and freedoms that his generation could not enjoy when he was little", he added.

Sánchez has also indicated that during his visit to the funeral chapel he had a conversation with the son of Nicolás Redondo, Nicolás Redondo Terreros, a historic leader of the PSE who in the last stage has shown his discrepancies with the current leadership of the PSOE to the point of that in May 2021 an expulsion file was opened for him. Although it was later archived without any consequences for the son of the historic union leader.
