Sánchez asks the G20 leaders not to use the war in Ukraine as a "pretext" to go back on decarbonization

MADRID, 15 Nov. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, has asked the G20 leaders not to use the war in Ukraine as a "pretext" to go back on the decarbonisation commitments and has insisted that the way out of the energy crisis involves accelerating the ecological transition and the deployment of renewable energies.

"If we fail to reduce emissions faster, we will end up spending much more, or we will even run out of time. So we must act now", stressed the President of the Government during his speech at the opening session of the G20 Summit, focused on food and energy security, which takes place on 15 and 16 Bali.

Sánchez has urged that what is urgent "does not prevent action on what is important", while recalling that the G20 was created to "address global challenges in times of turbulence. "Today we are once again called upon to show some light in the midst of the storm Let's live up to expectations", assured the President of the Government.

This is how he began his speech, highlighting that the G20, for the first time, is directly affected by the war because one of its members, the Russian Federation, is waging a "brutal and unjustified war of aggression against Ukraine". Thus, he has once again stressed that Russia must stop the war immediately.

"The food and energy crises created by the conflict in Ukraine are having devastating economic, social and development effects around the world. 828 million people go to bed hungry every night and energy prices have skyrocketed putting at risk the security of supply and the well-being of millions of households. The world simply cannot afford it," said the leader of the Executive.

Thus, before world leaders, Sánchez pointed out some of the keys to dealing with food security, such as: coordinating efforts and avoiding duplication; avoid export prohibitions and restrictions; and redouble efforts to increase supply and reduce food prices.

Within the framework of the G20 Summit, the Chief Executive will hold a bilateral meeting today with the President of the Republic of China, Xi Jinping, and another with the Prime Minister of Singapore, Lee Hsien Loong.

Tomorrow, the president's agenda includes his speech at the plenary session on digital transformation and will also hold bilateral meetings with heads of state or government from different countries and international organizations.

During the Summit, marked by the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Heads of State or Government discussed global economic recovery, energy and raw material prices, health, the food and energy crisis; and the energy and digital transition.
