Sánchez and Stoltenberg: The NATO Summit will show the unity of the allies for a "more dangerous" world

MADRID, 28 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The NATO Summit that is being held this week in Madrid will convey a message of "unity" from the allies to face the threats that come from a "more dangerous and more unpredictable" world, according to the President of the Government on Tuesday , Pedro Sánchez, and the secretary general of the Alliance, Jens Stoltenberg, in a joint appearance.

Sánchez and the NATO leader paid a visit to the Ifema facilities on Tuesday that will host the Summit over the next two days. They have toured the two pavilions built for the occasion, which occupy a space of 50,000 square meters, and verified that everything is ready before the conclave starts this Wednesday.

Stoltenberg has underlined the importance of this Summit, which he has defined as "fundamental" because it will approve a new Strategic Concept that will mark the Alliance's "road map" "in a more dangerous and unpredictable world".

As detailed, the Alliance will implement "important" changes in its deterrence and defense policy with "more prepared, active forces and equipment on the ground." In addition, it will agree on a "comprehensive" package of measures so that Ukraine "can maintain its right to self-defense."

The NATO leader also wanted to personally thank Sánchez for his Euro-Atlantic commitment and recalled Spain's commitment to the Alliance, which materializes in the international missions in which the Armed Forces participate.

As he recalled, Spain is part of a deterrence deployment in Latvia, participates in air police missions in the Baltic and has Navy ships framed in permanent maritime patrols in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea.

What Stoltenberg has not made reference to is the so-called southern flank, which has been cited by Sánchez as one of the novelties of the Strategic Concept, along with a "360-degree" vision to also address threats from Africa.

The President of the Executive agreed that the "full" purpose of this Summit is to send a message of unity on the part of the allies. "Democracies come together to defend democracy, the values of freedom, political plurality, respect for human rights and defense of an international order based on rules," he asserted.

In addition, he recalled that the Summit will also witness the negotiations for the accession of Finland and Sweden to the Alliance, an objective that he has been convinced will eventually be achieved.
