Senators will have a first salary increase of 1.5% in 2022, unlike deputies

The Senate Board did ratify this Wednesday to apply to senators the 1.5% increase agreed for this year with the civil service unions, unlike Congress, which has finally decided not to execute this first salary increase in the year 2022. In the Upper House, this has gone ahead thanks to the majority that make up the PSOE and PNV, who have voted in favor, against the rejection of the PP, as parliamentary sources have informed Europa Press.

Specifically, the PSOE has three representatives in the Senate, the same as the PP, and the PNV has a member in this body, who is mainly the one who decides in the tie between the two big parties. This has been the case with this measure, where the PNV senator has aligned himself with the three from the PSOE to carry out the 1.5% salary increase, while the PP has supported the increase for house staff but not for the parliamentarians.

However, in Congress the decision has been adopted with the votes of PP, Vox and two deputies from United We Can, while the PSOE has abstained and the other representative of the confederal group, Gloria Elizo, has been left alone defending that transferred to the parliamentarians the rise planned for the civil servants.

On September 29, both Houses approved their budgets for the year 2023, which included the forecast of raising the salary of parliamentarians the same as that agreed for officials.

Later, the Ministry of Finance agreed with the Workers Commissions and the UGT a salary increase for public employees of 2.5% for 2023, which throughout the year may reach 3.5% if some variables are met. The agreement also included applying this year a compensation clause for the CPI in the form of a 1.5% rise. In total, 4% of the current salary, with the option to reach 5%.

However, the formation of the Tables in Congress and in the Senate are different, since in the Upper House there are groups such as Vox and United We Can that do not have representation, while there are parties such as the PNV that have the key to certain votes. .

As confirmed by sources from the Bureau, the PP has been left alone in the Senate, maintaining its refusal to apply the salary increase to parliamentarians, although it was in favor of applying it to houseworkers.

In any case, for deputies and senators, the 2.5% increase for 2023 is maintained, which is included in the General State Budget project that began to be discussed this Wednesday in Congress.
