Russia puts the number of refugees from Ukraine at more than 1.5 million

MADRID, 27 May. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Russian authorities have estimated this Friday at more than 1.5 million the number of people who have arrived in the country fleeing the war in Ukraine, most of them from the self-proclaimed people's republics of Donetsk and Lugansk.

Official sources quoted by the Russian news agency TASS have stated that "as of Friday morning, more than 1.5 million people have crossed the border with Russia, including more than 247,000 children." "Most of them are citizens of the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics," they added.

They have also pointed out that around 33,000 people, including more than 11,000 children, are in 530 temporary centers in Russian territory and have stressed that more than 2,500 million rubles (about 36 million euros) have been delivered in aid worth of 10,000 rubles (about 144 euros) to each person who requested it when entering the country.

Ukraine has accused Russia of carrying out forced population transfers from the territories it controls in the framework of the invasion that began on February 24 by order of Russian President Vladimir Putin, although Moscow has rejected these accusations and has stressed that it has been limited to facilitating the transfer of those who want to flee the war.

According to data from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), more than 6.6 million people have fled Ukraine since the start of the war, which began on February 24, including about 945,000 who have crossed the border. with Russia, a figure that contrasts with the one provided by Moscow.
