Robles says that "increasing the defense budget is a commitment of the EU countries" and "Spain is going to comply"

The Defense Minister, Margarita Robles, assured this Wednesday that "increasing the Defense budget is a commitment of all the countries of the European Union, not in particular of the Ministry of Defense and, therefore, Spain is going to comply". "There is a commitment from the President of the Government", he remarked before advancing that "this commitment is going to be fulfilled as the other countries of the European Union are going to do: invest in Defense, invest in peace, security, freedom and in job creation".

Speaking to journalists during her stay in Rota (Cádiz) to visit the frigate Sofía, the Minister of Defense indicated that "the President of the Government and all the countries of the European Union have assumed a commitment, which is to increase spending on Defence, increase freedom, security and job creation", and recalled that "Spain fulfills its commitments because, more than ever, it has been seen that our security is a weak security that is threatened, in this case, in the issue of the invasion of Ukraine".

In this sense, Robles has assured that "from the Sofia frigate they highlight the threats that exist in the south, which range from the expansion of jihadism to illegal immigration and, for this reason, it is so important to increase investment in Defense, but not with the details that have come out in some media, which are not correct, but in the commitment of Spain and all the members of the European Union to invest in defense to invest in peace and job creation".

Finally, in relation to a possible increase of 3,000 million in the defense budget, the minister insisted that "there is a commitment from the Government of Spain, headed by its president, and from all the countries of the European Union and the NATO to increase investments in Defense, because that increase in investments in Defense, not this year, but over the years, is an investment in peace, freedom and security".

In this sense, he maintained that "Spain's commitment to increase the defense budget is not a credit for this year, but rather a plan that will be made for the following years, precisely to have a defense that guarantees us the peace, liberty and general security".
