Retail sales in Germany fell 5.4% in April

MADRID, 1 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The volume of retail trade in Germany registered a drop of 5.4% last April compared to the previous month and 0.4% compared to April 2021, as reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis).

"Actual turnover reached the lowest level since February 2021," the German statistical office noted.

Specifically, retail food sales registered a drop of 7.7% in April 2022 compared to the previous month, which represents the largest drop in the entire historical series, which dates back to 1994.

Compared to April 2021, food sales fell by 6.5%. "This evolution is probably due to the significant rise in food prices (8.6% compared to the same month of the previous year)," Destatis pointed out.

Likewise, non-food retail sales increased by 7.2% in April compared to the same month of the previous year, which was characterized by confinement measures, while they fell by 4.4% monthly.

In April 2022, online and mail-order retail achieved a sales increase of 5.4% compared to the previous month, but lost sales significantly compared to the same month last year, with a year-on-year drop of 9 .6%.
